Case Management

Purpose

In response to a need from the national Community Action network, CAMP created the first case management curriculum and training program targeted for Community Action Agencies. This body of materials is generally referred to as The Accountable Case Manager and consists of a one or two day course, a workbook/textbook, a Train-The-Trainer Program, and additional course work in motivational interviewing and case note preparation.

The Accountable Case Manager provides the discipline of case management as practiced in the Community Action Network with an accountability structure and management framework that supports the primary mission of self-sufficiency. The Accountable Case Manager program:

  • provides the tools and training for managers and staff in Community Action Agencies (CAAs) to acquire a basic understanding of case management practices,
  • provides the necessary skills for staff to be successful in their job,
  • shows how to support clients in realizing their goals and the incremental steps necessary to achieve those goals,
  • identifies a process to develop goals, incremental steps and benchmarks that mark a path to success,
  • identifies why the work of the front line worker is so necessary to the health and well-being of the agency.

While The Accountable Case Manager serves as a best practice model for Community Action Agencies, the same material has successfully been used in county human services including children and youth, mental health and mental retardation and workforce development organizations. The materials have also successfully been adapted to other community based organizations.

The Accountable Case Manager Train-The-Trainer Program

With the growing interest and requests for a quality case management curriculum, CAMP responded to this need by developing a Train-The-Trainer Program that certifies and licenses skilled trainers to offer the one day Accountable Case Manager course in their respective communities and states.

The Accountable Case Manager course departs from the traditional case management curriculum by addressing organizational and managerial issues in addition to the “hands on” training of front line direct service staff. It was created and written expressly for Community Action Agencies.

The Business Model
The Train-The-Trainer Program is built on a business model that recognizes the inherent talent of Community Action professionals to provide quality training to their constituents. This program seeks out persons who are already certified ROMA trainers or have proven training skills and can master a new curriculum in an intense three day training program. The program focuses on delivery of the case management curriculum more so than the development of training skills.

While the primary purpose of this Train-The-Trainer Program is to deliver a quality curriculum to support and improve case management and direct services, it also provides the opportunity for licensed trainers and their organizations to create additional revenue that supports their own or their organization´s on-going work. Community Action Agencies, their subcontractors, and other social service and community based organizations are always providing training opportunities for their staff and seek quality training and quality trainers.

As a certified licensed trainer for The Accountable Case Manager course, you are qualified to offer the one day course to the Community Action Network and any other social or community based organizations. Even though the Accountable Case Manager course was written for a Community Action audience, it can serve equally well in other social service organizations such as those funded by the United Way, local foundations or city and county government.

CAMP has conducted Train-The-Trainer Programs and certified trainers from Alabama, California, Florida, Kansas, Kentucky, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

The Accountable Case Manager Train-The Trainer Curriculum
Our technique for this Train-The-Trainer Program is to present each of the ten chapters in The Accountable Case Manager followed by training tips, insight into the material, and group discussion of the “script” and how to present each chapter. The master trainer will present each chapter following a real time schedule including group exercises.

The course is delivered using a PowerPoint presentation and a prepared trainer manual. This technique is demonstrated over the first day and a half. There will be an opportunity to customize the material to “fit” your training style.

Each participant will be assigned two chapters or parts thereof to present to the entire group. Each participant will also be required to conduct a group exercise. This will allow you the opportunity of working with the PowerPoint and practicing in front of their peers. Each person will be expected to self-evaluate their presentation followed by a general group discussion. Participants will be assigned their chapters to present prior to the actual training session.

The program is three-four days in length depending on the number of attendees.
